<image:caption>Urban landscape just before the election of El Sisi in Egypt. The most of the pictures were made from a viewpoint due to the impossibility of media covering in the streets of Cairo that period. The series of photos shows Cairo in the period before the final elections; like in a state of emergency. Weeks before the official candidates of the presidential elections were announced huge bill boards with the portrait of el-Sisi were placed at the streets and squares. While the influences of the Down Town blockades in daily life continuous, remembrance and hope of the (anti-)revolutionary spring were still visible as graffiti on the streets and squares of Down Town Cairo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Macedonia- still officially called the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia - (FYROM) the right wing government has adapted a policy of ‘Antikvizatzija‘ . ‘Antiquation’ refers to the Renaissance phenomenon of remodeling the city in to an classic ancient metropolis. The current rebranding of Skopje unrolls the nation’s obsession memorizing all sorts of historical characters from the Antique period which modern-day Macedonia traces itself back to. Drawing inspiration from the Neo Classical style, the Skopje 2014 project envisages the construction of some 20 buildings, including a holocaust memorial center, museums, theaters, concert halls and hotels. Over 40 bronze and marble statues are also being erected to adorn the surroundings, including a triumphal arch and an obelisk.

The origin of Alexander the Great is at the heart of a bigger conflict. The relationship with Greece is troubled as the two neighbors claiming both the origin of the warrior king and the ancient symbols of power. The project officially launched as "Skopje 2014" has been criticized for its nontransparent cost of €500 million, critics refers to the process of constructing or structuring a national identity through nation building using the power of the state. with a finale outcome of a theme park.</image:caption>

<image:caption>During midsummer the Lapland Artic municipality of Kemijarvi seems to be even more deserted then it ever was.

Estimated 10.000 people live spread widely over the Kemijarvi district in Eastern Lapland. For two weeks in July I stayed here photographing boys and girls who spent their holidays drinking, hanging around and driving circles their old rusty German cars, pimped up Japanese horsepowers and classic Americans.Beside these activities as described above as local ‘youth culture’ there is of course the possibility for them to enjoy the beautiful lakes and forests just like city people from the south and heavy packed tourists do in vacation timecruising huge & expensive camper vans in the empty landscape.

The ones who can stand the mosquitos, reckless reindeer on the run and curious bears go even hiking, stay overnight in one of the available open huts in the Finnish ‘wilderness’ meanwhile eaten up by the thousands of insects, soaked wet through suddenly heavy rainfall.

Don’t forget the 24 hours daylight schedule in this particular period which will drive you mad after a while. But most of the kids are just normal spoiled bored kids and like to hang around, though the unemployment rate amongst young adults seems to have some slight impact. Most of the factories in the area replaced their activities to cheap labour countries in Asia. According to Statistics Finland, Finland’s unemployment rate stood at 10.5 per cent in May 2010. What remains are the commercial woods. Note that a total of some 12,000 foreign berry-pickers arrive in Finland every year.

Because the local youth doesn’t seem to be interested in picking berry during their holidays, berry farms and suppliers inviting thousands of seasonal workers from Thailand to Finland to pick wild berries. ..(!?)..

Late in the evening they gathering around in Kemijjarvi’s central open spots, parking lots and gas stations driving the same circles for hours, listen up beat music and smoking cigarettes, picking up friends and the luckiest, some girls .They even give the ritual a name;…….‘Huru’….

While drinking and driving doesn’t seem to be the issue of this ritual (the ones who drive usually don’t drink and vice versa) the Finnish government is over concerned about the alcohol abuse amongst young adults. For instance, supermarkets don’t sell alcohol beverages after 21.00 hours. A report made by the Finnish Motor Insurers’ Centre, teen driver fatalities were 49 of the total of 261 fatal accidents recorded in Finland last year. But according to the UN there are about 7,000 road traffic crashes in Finland each year, with 375 killed and 9,100 injured. This translates into a very safe rate of 7 killed per 100,000. One of the lowest rate in Europe.

Let’s be honest, the place doesn’t offer more then estimated five filling stations, four supermarkets, three camping shops and some restaurant bar. The landscape is filled with forests and lakes. No potential interesting jobs and economic decline as in the rest of Europe. In the hotel bar you can join the friday evenings karaoke contest while white blond kids stare at you with there big blue eyes. Some in the pub say that the Fins only believe in two things; Santa Claus and Satan. Both are probably living in Lapland...</image:caption>

<image:caption>While the last two decades after the civil war narco related violence turned up Guatemala in to a ongoing turmoil, the lack of essential routes in the isolated mountain region and inhabiting of strong traditional Maya communities Atitlan again became the island of tranquility it always has been. Solitary travelers in seek of a kind of spiritualism in combination with leisure and nature appeared along the lake shores. Convincing themselves they found a secrete and affordable heaven they were not a ware of their growth in numbers.

But In October 2009, a bloom of cyanobacteria rapidly covered 35% of the lake’s surface. The Global Nature Fund (GNF) names Atitlan one of the most threatened lakes in the world. Scientists identified the bloom as cyanobacteria Lyngbya, a strain of blue-green algae and is not fully understood by the scientific community. By December the bloom had begun to disappear, but deep below the tranquil blue waters another bloom waits for conditions to ripen.Although the ecological disaster gets a lot of attention and the authorities trying to save the lake, the social issue remains not well understood. The different lake communities of the traditional Mayas, the expat population and tourists, they all play a roll in this staged drama. Even when they have different motives, they are dependent on the lake.

Troubled paradise

The local economy based on agriculture still suffer under the devastation caused by tropical storms of 2005 and 2010 but the same time numbers of visitors boomed again, making the region’s economy more reliant on tourism. The opportunity of increasing tourism flocked the once hippies - but now pragmatic New Age entrepreneurs - in the hunt of Maya owned property encouraging both foreign investments as well yoga teachers, therapists and alternative retailers in biological markets soon to come. In search of remedy in places like San Marcos, San Pedro the possibilities of spiritual shopping varies from rebirth, reiki, creative energy work, crystal singing bowls, foot reflexology until aura cleaning. The expats became a part of the population in almost every lake side town. Early morning group mediation and yoga along the lake shores became even for the local fishermen a common thing. Woken up by the growing amount of built lofts, bungalows and mansions around the lake the Indian communities stopped their land sales. The Mayans have for obvious reasons distrust for outsiders. Even the aspects of the ancient Maya spirituality practiced by the expat doesn’t effect their communities based on the catholic church. But witnessing the benefits of the others, they adapted the formula for affordable tourism and a successful business with some changes concerning the appearance. Though this difference by community, they created A new parallel world made of concrete that provides cheap hotels, shops and internet cafes marking the transition of the traditional lake villages in to an average Mexican beach resort.

May 2011, the Prensa Libre has reported that a major bloom of cyanobacteria has returned, or resurfaced, at Lake Atitlan.

This bloom is very early compared to other years. If the next several months of 2011 turn out to be warm and sunny, it is reasonable to assume that this years growth of cyanobacteria will be as bad or worse than it was in 2009.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the largest copper mines in Europe is located in Bor eastern Serbia. The complex is in operation since 1903. The state-owned Mining and Smelting Bor (RTB) runs two open pit mines and one underground and employed about ets. 5000 workers. Since the mid-1990s and during the time of sanctions on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, production in this mine dropped significantly from the very prosperous 1970s and 1980s. This has been due to both diminishing reserves and the inability to obtain new equipment that would most efficiently gather the remaining ore no longer of high grade. With stringent environmental (EU) regulations now in place, upgrade of industrial lines of the RTB company started in 2014. </image:caption>

      <image:title> Noorderlicht Human Conditions</image:title>
<image:caption>Selection of the project Dwelling and Belonging/ Young (in) Serbia on display at international Noorderlicht photo manifest 2009

In 2008 I started working on the documentary photography project Dwelling and Belonging (Lutanje i Pripadanje) in Serbia and nearest Balkan regions for different kind of reasons.

Despite the Milošević era ended in 2000 Serbia is still somehow in a post conflict period. Second; although troubled by recent history, slowed down by the economic decline and the heritage of Tito’s Socialist Yugoslavia the transition of the young republic of Serbia (2006) is continuously.

The past and present come in many appearances, some bitter, and some beautiful but still clearly visible. The third reason; the approach of observation, through surveying different places I get involved in life of people I meet. To disclose the ordinary, I mainly focus on the young generation and their relationship between identity and home ground.

Furthermore, the boundary between intriguing and stereotypical approaches is difficult to draw. In the Western imagination, the image of the Balkans is dominated by the cliché of rash bandits, wild gypsies and otherwise ill-mannered half-barbarians. In a certain sense the Balkans are a symbol for what we in Western Europe have gradually gotten rid of in our so-called civilisation process. Moreover, our image of Serbia is still further clouded because the country is regarded as the chief culprit in the Yugoslavian wars of the 1990s.

These wars are history now, but Serbia still has to live with their effects every day. For the young people of the capital, who grew up relatively far away from the real violence of the war, these consequences are visible and tangible. In scarcely twenty years Serbia degenerated into a regressive society that has become accustomed to the certainty of uncertainty and the lack of any perspective on the future.</image:caption>

Although Moldova is shifting towards Europe in search of economic prosperity - like other Post Soviet states- their historic heritage is a question that is not answered yet.
A new generation of young people who grow up with changing values are facing a fast consuming world of globalisation where is no time or interests in their identity.
